Blizzard at Richmond
Monday, 27th August 2012
At 3 pm on Saturday 14th July 2012 heavy snow started falling in the Richmond area of the High Karoo.
The snow continued for twelve hours by which time it was 1 metre deep in the mountains and about 1 foot deep on the low ground.
Cattle, game and birds sought shelter wherever they could and only started emerging late on Sunday morning.
Power to the area was knocked out for two days and cellphone contact was still lost a week later (wet antennae).
The good news is that the runoff has filled the dam.
